Newbie speaks. I have asked Dune owners this, but I think I should put it out to all those who have 40 profile rubber fitted to their cars. I have found that VOSA have issued a recall on Pirelli 18" 40 profile tyres made in 2007 and fitted to Alfa Romeos because of tyre wall splitting. (Google Pirelli tyre recalls) My son has a Dune and this was fitted with 40 profile ZR 17" Pirelli tyres made and fitted in 2007. At the next MOT the car failed it's test because one of the tyres had a small split in its inner wall, very hard to spot, but no denying, it was there. A year later the other Pirelli has gone in the same way, the other axle has BF Goodrich 40 profiles fitted to it which are fine at this time . The Pirellis have loads of tread left on them and are no where near the minimum tread depth. The MOT tester stated this was common for 40 profiles to fail in this way, not just affecting Pirellis, but the odd thing about this is the failure affects the inner walls only, it is very hard to spot. So any feed back would be appreciated, may I respectfully suggest, take the tyres off and have a close look on the inner walls for very small cracks parallel to the tread of the tyre. Perhaps the sponsors may be able to comment on this? This could have far reaching serious consequences. The Dune is hardly going to put these tyres any where near their design capabilities, other cars though....

tend to find it's normally down to under inflated tyres as it's hard to tell with the smaller sidewall, so regular checks should prevent this and also knowing what they should be inflated too

I will have to wait and see, but I have also heard of another incident involving Jaguar and the replacement of all 4 low profile tyres. In short, check the inner walls. Had it been under inflation, it seems logical that the outer walls would also be affected, they are not.

Yeah my friend who worked at a performance wheel and tyre shop told me and it use to happen to his dads Jag XKR even though he kept telling him they need like 40 psi in them, people seem to forget that lower profile generally run more pressure not sure why it wouldn't show on the outer wall unless it's different as it's the outer that gets all the damage and wheathering so may have a coating on it

The BF Goodrich tyres fitted have not cracked...yet. It is going to take some convincing me that they have failed because of pressure. It will be a few months before I get contact from Pirelli.

I have found out the incident involving Jaguar related to Michelin tyres and was in 2006 with walls bulging on 35 profile tyres.

well i know that getting a split in my 40 18in tyre after only 1200 motorway miles really ****** me off, to the point if i get another split i will go up to 45 instead, i was always told that regardless of tyre size and profile you should stick to the makers pressure, but if not that would explain my split side wall, what do you incease the pressure by?

i use to run my 215/35/18 at about 38-40 psi but confirm with a wheel and tyre place

This matter has been fully investigated by the manufacturers and VOSA. No recall will be made after the discovery that there was a fault in the manufacturing process. The matter has been resolved to the satisfaction of all.
