Ticking Noise on Start Up

S Reg A4 2.5 Tdi V6. When the car is started up I can hear a steadyvticking noise coming from what would seem to be coming from near the windscreen possibly under the bonnet - I'm not sure to be honest. Would anyone know what this may be? Thanks Lenny

I should add that ticking dies away after a few seconds and is noisier from outside the car. It is only there on start up.

I know nothing about the V6 but would assume, like most VAG engines that it has hydraulic tappets (or cam followers as they are also known).

Anyway a chatter for a few seconds is quite normal whilst the oil pressure within the engine rises and they pump up with oil.

Thanks Col. So not too much to worry about then! I'm taking it in to get the cambelt done tomorrow so I will mention it then and see what he says. Lenny

It when they don't stop ticking after 3 seconds or so that you've got a problem

I spoke to Andy at A4 Audi in Clydebank and he told me it is the heater motor, not to worry about it.
