Mechatronic Replacement

Car is due to be picked up from SKF (gee cross) at 17.00 today, they have had it since yesterday to fit a new mechatronic unit to cure snatchy changes and intermittant stalling. Its also have a CV boot as one has split.

Question is - Do you notice a big difference in how it drives with the new unit fitted or is it same old same old

I have had a new 1.2 polo for two days, nice red one. Nice car but the new 1.2 3 pot is very noisy inside the cabin. The seat also feels as if it as at the highest point when its at the lowest, driving position of a transit.

Anyway can wait to pick her up and feel torque again!!!

Mine was replaced last September/October. When you take it away it will have already been set up on "basic settings" and will take some 50 miles or so to "adapt to your driving style" (so I was told!). Mine was great, smooth changes and changing up quite early on light throttle. Still is, although I took it back again this spring for jerkiness, which was fixed (ok so far) by an ECU software update.
Definitely no complaints with the DSG!

I believe a lot of 2007 car's had new mech's, mine has, and the other 4 I looked at also had, and all within 30k as well, as for the jerking, I'm unsure if it's a fault of a characteristic of the box, mine still snatches now and again, and I hear the donk now and again as well, one problem with it is ppl buy it thinking it's an auto, and I'm afraid it isn't like an auto at all in how it does business.

Ask for some proof in writing that it's been done, as to do the unit it has to be drained, so you now don't need a DSG service for another 40k, having it in writing will help if you want to sell before then, explain to the guy it's not to shoot VW with later, it's just to show proper history for the next owner.

as for the jerking, I'm unsure if it's a fault of a characteristic of the box,

The jerking I mentioned was the engine, not the gears. gearchanges are smooth and always ready to use the torque

I have had my software done about 6 weeks ago, for snatchiness / grabbing / strange stalling for no apparent reason.

I think this software update is them messing with the clutch packs. it seemed to cure the grabbing / stalling for a while but then the grimlins returned.

I booked it in for the 'master tech' to have a play within 100 yards he said 'new mechatronic' apparently there is a list of chassis numbers affected by mechatronic issues and mine is on it. (early 57 2.0 TDI)

I have done 50,000 miles in it so far and LOVE IT LOVE IT LOVE IT. My car is due for changing dec 10 and will i tick the DSG box again? OOOOOOHHH YES!!!!!!

You do learn to live with the undecidedness (if thats a word) of the gear box mid corner / approaching round abouts adjusting driving style accordingly. Its not an auto really ( as we all know them anyway) Its a manual with twiki offof buck rodgers glued on t' side and twiki is a bit tempremental.

However - SNOW (DSG = doesnt snow go) dont get me started. In fact search 'dsg snow' in google and my thread is hit number 3

You do learn to live with the undecidedness (if thats a word) of the gear box mid corner / approaching round abouts adjusting driving style accordingly. Its not an auto really ( as we all know them anyway) Its a manual with twiki offof buck rodgers glued on t' side and twiki is a bit tempremental.

Fingers, you are SO right! Agree 100%! It is really a manual box with 2 auto clutches.
Re snow, I understand the method is: select Sport, with ESP off. Not logical, I know, but at least the drive stays on and to both wheels without interruption! I guess it best to switch to Drive once over the worst of it.

Snow - i think it may have been my 3mm left HP premacies that were the problem.

I tried it drive sport manual - esp on off, hell i even tried going everywhere in reverse. NADA.

Once moving all was well and it handled the snow pretty well considering, i think its the fact that 'I MUST SET OF IN FIRST GEAR' too much torque to the wheels, mine would even spin and go nowhere on the creep of the diesel. Anyway summer is upon us and the usual M5 trip to cornwall will be a breeze again - no sore clutch leg in traffic.

well picked it up last night and....................

the difference is amazing:-

1 - alot smoother through the box

2 - holds second better at very low speed (instead of raging in to first at no stop roundabouts)

3 - seems to blip the gas on manual change down to reduce the engine drag.

4 - It is also a little more decided on which gear it should be in across the whole speed range (before it would hold 4th too long into a 3rd gear corner only changing down about 15m after the sweet spot of the apex)

5 - the gear change in 'D' seems to take a little longer which has eliminated any grabbing.

All in all i loved my DSG anyway, but now i want to buy it flowers.

These are just first impressions after about 50 miles, so it could still be learning.
