    Morning all!!

Sorry, but another quick question if you dont mind but i am still a newbie to Audis!

    Tiptronic on my S4.

If i am cruising in say 4th or 5th and i lightly stab at the throttle pedal, it appears to kickdown and the revs increase, but the number on the DIS stays the same and doesnt show its dropped a gear?

If i then ease off, the revs sort of drop back down to what they were before.

Is this how the ECU controls the gearbox and only really drops a gear when you floor it?

    Thanks

Hi Jason, I think I know exactly what you mean, my 3.0 quattro sport tiptronic did the same thing(2002 A4 saloon).
I believe it's normal but was one of the things I hated about the box, that and the way it would only change up at pre set speeds, so if driving a 10 mile trip at 30 and 40 speed limits the bugger would never get into top, which would really upset the mpg

Do you have the problem in all gears? It's normal for an auto gearbox to free up from lock-up and start using the clutches to control the power during accelleration. When you go into lock-up it feels like it's shifting to a higher gear, hence the confusion with a lot of people saying their 5 speeds from the 90's DO have 6 gears (even though there were no 6 speeds on the market at the time) because the box goes into lock-up mode in 5th with a steady pedal. Not sure if this is what you mean though.. sorry for not bringing the correct technical terms on the table here, I am not familiar with the terms in english.

    Well, just a quick update,

after numerous visits to the dealer, and discovering a few more probs that occurred with the gearbox (slight knocking when kickdown from 4 to 3 in auto or manual mode, and occasional banging into gear when selecting drive or reverse), Audi CS have admitted there are serious problems with the box, and have agreed to replace the gearbox under the Audi approved extended warranty!!!

Problem now is, they take 5-days for delivery to the dealer!

Still, i am cruising around in a brand new A4 2.0D with all the toys whch the dealer has loaned me, and it is rather nice.

Plus, Audi CS have been superb throughout. I have literally had a phone call each day to inform me of progress with their investigations.

It just proves that yes, buying from a dealer may very well be a little more expensive, but the after care that i have got is well worth it.

Will report back when i have the car back with the new box fitted.

AS a further update, had another call from Audi CS yesterday, and they offered me £200 in Audi vouchers, or a free service for my inconvenience!

Naturally i took the free service as its a big one next time

    Superb!

Had a call from my repairing dealer today to say that the new gearbox has been fitted and will be ready Monday after a geometery check is done!

Not sure why they are doing that though?

Removing the box requires the sub frame removal and refitting the sub frame requires 4 wheel alignment to reset the camber

    Ah ok thanks.

No wonder they tried everything to sort it before replacing the box.

I dread to think how much it would have cost if i had to pay for it!!

The problem with this fault lies in the valve chest and contamination of the oil, also the original oil grade.
Replacing the valve chest and changing the oil type normally fixes the box and in some variant there is a sw update and a long adaption road test which resets clutch kiss point/kickdown
Cost £4000 for the box then 8 hours for replacing and 2 hours for the 4 wheel plus the hire car
