CV Joints

Hi all am new on here.

Just a quick bit of information really, my 99 A4 1.9tdi has developed a rumble round right hand bends from the front left wheel, i guessed this may be a wheel bearing and changed it but has had no effect. My next guess is a CV joint.

Does anyone know how to determine if its inner or outer thats making the noise, i was going to change both but they are quite expensive so was wondering if there was a way of telling, or is one more prone to wear than the other? or is it simply best to go down the first route and change both?
The car hs covered 120,000 miles if that makes any diference.
