A few weeks back I posted a question about my PD 150 ARL Golf going into limp mode, and the subsequent diagnosis from the garage was a knackered turbo, throwing oil into the intercooler and coating the MAF with oil. Since then I've done some more investigating and diagnostics myself and kept getting error 17564 MAP sensor - open circuit/short to earth. So I replaced the MAP sensor and lo and behold... all power is back and no limp mode! All's well so far and I'm not down £1200 for a new turbo.

But.... my only concern is the old MAP had quite a bit of oil on it, so my question is.... is this normal? Or is it indeed being coated with oil from a leaking turbo? And if that is the case then the new MAP will also be prone to the same failure as the old one.

There is always a certain amount of oil in the system, and through time it accumulates on the sensor, you can prevent this by removing the turbo hoses from the intercooler and let the oil drain out over night

Thanks for the reply Kenney, it's put my mind to rest a little anyway. I had a look as best I could at the intercooler and there was some oil, but nothing excessive (as you say, a bit of oil is expected) and my oil levels aren't dropping at all, so I think I may be ok. Fingers crossed!

I'll leave it to drain over night this weekend as well, just to be safe.
