hi i have a Passat tdi 115bhp 2000 model with about 142k miles, Its just developed a nice fault ,on the motorway it suddenly lost the throttle and the rev counter sat at about 1200 revs.I managed to get home by turning the car off, then starting back up again. When i got home i put the car on my fault scanner and it came back with 18047 fault code, i read this to be accelerator pedal position sensor. So i took pedal off and unplugged the connector and sprayed a liberal amount of contact cleaner into the plug and socket. Today it started back again so my question is? Is it defo the accelerator pedal sensor or is it something that occurs on the Passat after high mileage if anyone has any answers as i need my car back on the road asap. cheers.

The accelerator TPS can be found under "01 Engine" with a VAG-COM and it will start at 0% and should go to 100% when fully pressed. You should be able to test this with the IGN "on" and engine not running

It could be the throttle position sensor or faulty wiring. The easiest way to test is to replace it but it's also expensive as it is two sensors in one. It will flag a fault and act up if either sensor is reading wrong or if the readings don't agree.

Hi Martin we are talking about the sensor screwed to the throttle pedal? Yes it is expensive about £60 , just want to be sure.
