My 1999 mk 4 VW Golf convertible looses hydraulic fluid from the resevoir in the power hood motor located in the boot. Eventually the power hood doesnt operate and the motor just runs without the hood moving. The fluid appears to end up in the rear footwell of the car, not in the boot.

Has anyone seen this before, can you suggest what I should be looking for, any tips.

    Gratefull for any advice

Thanks for the reply. I dont think it is the seals on the motor. The motor and the area around it is completely dry, and nothing runs into the boot where the motor is located.

Its as though there is a driven gear located alongside the rear seat, where the frame of the hood would pivot/be operated from. I think it is likely to be from that end as the fluid ends up in the footwell.

    Any suggestions?

I think I may have sorted it........

Took out the rear seat and offside rear interior side panel (next to bench seat)

Loads of hydraulic fluid under the seat and in the insulation under the carpet. (offside only)

The Hydraulic lines run to a ram that operates the hood mechanism.

When I operated the hood (after filling the resevoir) on each operation a drip of hydraulic fluid formed on the nut connecting the upper hose to the elbow which is connected directly to the ram. On close inspection it seemed that it was from the nut/elbow threads.

A quick nip up of the nut, and 10 operations of the hood. NO DRIPS !!

Had to repace the insulation under the carpet, but I think the jobs a good un.

I hope someone else finds this info useful.
