    Hi Forum,

Suffering from a power loss problem whic I have tried to solve, but with no result...

    Running a Golf 1.9TDI SE (100bhp), 2002..

    Symptoms:
At 70mph sudden loss of power and engine goes into limp mode. I can maintain the same speed but no power for acceleration at all. The power usually fails when in 5th gear and usually when putting a strain on the engine (ie going up a hill or incline). If I can accelerate past 70mph (say 85) then all is OK. If I turn the engind OFF and then ON, even iif only for a second, the power comes back.

    Actions so far:
Read on the forum that the MAF might be the problem. Replaced BOSH MAF with a Pierburg MAF from a large parts dealer in Leeds. I had to provide all of the engine details, including engine code for them to match the correct MAF.
Fitted MAF. I am still suffering from the same power loss. However, the engine does seem to give more power and much smoother than the BOSH MAF.

I have head talk on the forum about sticking turbo fans and faulty air pressure valves, but I am at a loss as to what might be the problem. Since turning the engine off and then on resets the problem I would have thought it was electrical, but then again Im not a mechanic.

Please can anyone help, and has anyone had this problem before?

I had a similar problem with my beetle 1.9 PD TDI - same power loss, same reset when engine turned off etc. VW main dealer thought that it might be the N75 valve or the turbo but traced the problem - turned out to be a split hose on the turbo wastage gate. £20 to fix.

    Hi,
Thanks for the reply. That's one area I had not considered. Just been reading an article on the engine switching to "limp" mode to protect the engine when it thinks there is a problem. I will check out all of the hoses to see if I can see anything.

    search is your friend

sounds like the turbo is going into limp mode to me, could be over or under boost, caused by a boost blockage or a boost leak (split hose?)

do a search on the forum for power loss, have a read through the posts that you find and im sure youll find your answer

Do you know where the hose is to the turbo, roughly? Save me scrambling around in the engine all weekend

Had a problem similar to this on my GT TDI 115 complete power loss as if the engine was in limp mode, turned out to be a split hose from the vacum pump to the back of the turbo. Look on the right side of the bulkhead(as you look under the bonnet) , should see a valve with three braided rubber hoses, follow the one across the engine bay down the back of the exhaust manifold to the turbo. This is where I found two holes burnt into mine by the manifold, I simple cut the holed sections out and rerouted the pipe and reconnected using some 7mm inline connectors which I had from B&Q for plumbing my fridge in. Solved the problem and has been okay since
