my car runs fine if I am driving about 30 to 40 miles a hour however the car is making a rattling noise when I accelerate (rev) when I am stood still

I have been advised I may need a new engine, can’t understand this as the engine runs ok

    Hi,

No one has replied. Can anybody give me some advice please?

There are some very knowledgeble people here on the forum, any of you your help would be much appreciated. Getting quite stressed with this problem.

The car runs ok but performance is not like before however the main problem is that when car is switched on and revved there is a loud rattle noise which to me seems like is coming from engine. Sound only happens when I press the accelerator in idle.

It runs 30-40mph fine but only up to around 70mph.

It has gone into limp mode a few times before and my local mechanic has fixed it with few minor parts.

He seems to think it could be my engine that has died

I am currently searching google for VW specialists but would welcome any help.

    Thanks

So someone told you you might need a new engine, but didn't tell you why they thought that? Personally, I don't know what the problem is when you rev. The experts aren't on here 24 hours a day. Be patient and I'm sure someone will come back with some sensible advice.

    Hi mate,

    Thanks for responding.

Yes I'm not going to use that mechanic which I have been doing for a few years now.

Anyhow the problem turned out to be the Cam shaft gone faulty. I managed to find a very good VW independent specialist in Horwich and he is inspecting it today and will give me full quote on repair.

Hopefully the Cam Shaft will need replacing and no other components will have been damaged due to engine going in safe/limp mode a few times.

He told me it is a common fault on PD 150 engines in 2002/2003 due to the way the injectors/follower etc were designed.

I was using Castrol GTX oil in it and have read I needed to use 505.1 Grade which I am not sure I did. This may have caused it.

Anyhow hopefully I will have this sorted now and repair bill wil be better than buying a new engine.

Unfortunately, worn camshafts on the ARL engines is frequently talked about on here and seems to be something the ARL engines suffer from if not perfectly maintained, in terms of oil changes (with the right oil!) You have to use 505.01 or 507.00 certified oil.

Yes I have done a bit of reading on it and was never made aware by my local mechanic that it wasn't the right oil.

I had it regularly serviced and oil changed at 10k intervals, However with Castrol GTX never paid attention to oil grade spec.

Still waiting to get a full report on the cost of the repair. Wish I would've known before an expensive bill (still hoping for £500 or so)

    Thanks mate
