    Hi All
    The car is Nov 2001 1.6S 16v ( AZD ) 63000mls.
Had her in for an oil change recently, when I got her back the mechanic said the clutch was getting lazy all the way up. He said it wont just pack in, rather it would slowly get worse with the bite point getting lower.
He said if I want it done, it would be £303 fitted, or £300 for both clutch and flywheel and £120 to fit both.
On this forum, I was told the clutch may be on the way out if the bite point was longer or near the end of it's travel. I am confused !!!
I checked it the other day, put the handbrake on, put her into first and let the clutch out. It didn't appear to be slipping and the car didnt conk out.
In an ideal world, I would like to replace just the clutch when I feel it is about to die and not worry about the flywheel.
What do you guys think ?

The biting point becomes higher in the peddle when the clutch is wearing and not lower. either your mechanic is talking **** or you missunderstood him about this biting point.

If your not experiencing any clutch slip when your driving about then dont worry about it at all. i expect a clutch takes a long time to wear in a 1.6 petrol thats not been abused. your clutch will go gradually and you will have plenty of warning before it needs replacing as long as you dont abuse it (constant race starts from traffic lights).

the clutch test you did in 1st gear isnt really good unless the clutch is way worn allready, the clutch slips less in 1st and 2nd gears. i guess a better test would be to find a long steep uphill road and try accelerating full throttle from lowish revs in 3rd or 4th gear depending on speed. a worn clutch will slip around the point where the engine produces max torque and your revs will go ahead of the correct rpm for that gear/speed forcing you to back off.

hold on a minute ...... you put the handbrake on, put her in 1st gear and let the clutch fully out? .. and she didnt stall?????? ahhh youve confused me now. if your still in the same spot when your in 1st gear and the clutch is fully let out then there is something wrong. only a totally dead fully worn clutch would let this happen and if it was that bad you wouldnt even be able to move off.

    Hi
Update. I put the handbrake on, put her into first and let it out until it gives a good bite, almost like she is about to move off, and then stop.
Getting an ex vw tech to look at it on wed for me, so i shall update this post.
    Thanks for the replies.
Still unsure about the flywheel ????
