This vehicle has been owned and driven by myself from new.
Have been away for 2 weeks, car sitting unused on drive. Started car and drove for 1/2 mile when warning sounded and diesel heater light proceeded to flash, noticed immediate loss of power, returned home and consulted manual. Manual states that this indicates engine management problem. Reccomended action: Take car to VW dealer. Started car again, fault has disapeared. I then drive approx 8 miles and fault re-appears, return home and decide to take car to nearest VW dealer (who are not original suppliers of car) next morning. Next day turn up at VW dealer but the fault has not re-occured, however decide to inform them of fault. Explained to person on service reception circumstances and nature of fault. Receive blank uncomprehending gaze from said person and am told that they have never experienced this fault before. I suggest that a quick check with diagnostic may throw light on problem, I receive the 1000 yard stare and am told that as the fault is not present it would be a complete waste of their time to pursue it and I should reurn with the car when the fault is present. Needless to say the fault has not re-occured since then and I can only presume fault was related to not being used for 2 weeks. The point of all this is that I have a car that has been troublefree and I am generally very pleased with. The car is on long life service and this is the first contact with VW's service and I am not impressed, the car is still under warranty but I now have a nagging doubt about the reliability of this vehicle.

    Welcome to the forum.

If there was a fault it would be logged in the ecu even though the light is now off, it can be read by there equipment so thats service receptionist ********.

"diesel heater light proceeded to flash" you mean the glow plug light or the DPF light?

So did you opt for the longlife service? You had yours in March and done 7k and I had mine in January 2010 and I've done over 8k so we are doing similar driving. I opted for the shorter time and distance 10k/12 month service but I had the service plan with mine.

P.S. Please break it up into paragraphs?

Just to clarify, the the flashing light was the glow plug light.

I opted for long life service based on the experience I had with my previous car (Audi A2) 5 Years ownwership with no problems.

At present service indicator shows 4800 miles or 278 days until service.

My average fuel consumption is 41.6 mpg but appears to be improving as engine loosens up.

If its showing 4.8k left and you've done 7k then thats a 12k service which isn't a LongLife service thats 20k.

Well as I said you would be better off having the shorter 10k/12 months services as your doing similar driving as me and the fuel con is about the same.

P.S. You could post some spec in your signature?
