    Hi All,
Can anyone confirm if the pre-2001 B5s have the clutch pulley on the alternator?

I've been reading up on here about the alternator pulley / clutch and how this is important for managing demand by the power steering pump on the serpentine belt (prevents squealing and bouncing of the belt).
What I'm not clear on is whether my alternator has one of these clutch pulleys. Took my alternator off on the weekend as I think its brushes need replacing, and had a close look at the pulley.

    It's a 4-groove pulley. This comes off a 99 reg 1.8T passat. The alternator code is 06B 903 016D Valeo 90amp 14V.

The pulley is fixed and does not free-wheel in any direction (i.e. will turn the internal spindle in either direction, regardless of me carefully jamming the internal fins with a screw driver. The end of the internal spindle HAD a 6-spine spline fitting but this corroded and turned-out so it now looks like a hex fitting.

I don't believe that this alternator has a clutch/pulley system, I can't see how this is achieved on the current layout? Found an image of a new pulley...

It just looks like a straight forward pulley.

Was the clutch pulley implemented during 2001?
Any additional info on this history would be appreciated.
    thanks

That's not a clutch pulley, just a standard fixed one.

I had an early 1998 Passat Sport Estate TDI which had the freewheeling pulley that eventually jammed and threw off the aux. belt with disastrous results when given to a main Dealer to fix. I posted it on here recently. My son has it now and it still is a great car.
