    Hi guys,

First time poster, so apologies if I've broken any rules.

    Basically my situation is this:

Due to lack of care / negligence - I didn't top up my engine with coolant, I left it too long and the engine burned out. It burned out bad. I hold my hands up - I was an idiot and should have known better.

I have had the car towed to an Audi approved dealership in NW London, and I have had a WHOPPING quote of £8,000 to replace the engine (parts & labour). Now, I'm stuck between a rock and a hard place as the car needs to be repaired as it is on finance and I have to return the car in the same condition as I got it.

My questions are the following: I understand that Audi A4 engines aren't cheap and nor is labour and that the job is huge to replace an engine - but do people think the charges are fair? If so, then I'll pay them. But if not, can you please let me know and with a reasoned case?

I also would like to know, if possible, if there is anything I can do to get this assessed by an alternative place? My problem is, the car is not movable / drivable and I'm concerned about being stung with additional removal / transfer costs only to be given the same / a larger quote!

Any help and / or advice is greatly appreciated. As I say, I'm willing to take the blame for this - but just wondered if there is any slightly better alternatives (I'm based in NW6 - Audi dealership is in Finchley Road, any independent Audi VW specialists I could look up?) out there I can pursue.

    Thanks in anticipation,
    Danny

Hi ,you should be able get hold of an engine from a write off salvage company, it may cost you afew grand ,but not £8000.You have to remember that audi main dealer charge about £80-£90 a hour. I think that the cost of a brand new complete engine, with labour.cheers moton

Find an indie garage who can do it, find an engine from a salvage yard. It'll take some effort and a few phone calls but you can cut that 8k down to under 3k I reckon (depending on part prices and what parts other than the engine you may need)
