I'm hoping to do an oil and filter change this week but despite looking in the manual and previous posts I can't get clear info as to which oil to buy. I want to buy the best oil available within reason say up to £50.

The online Halfords and Castrol systems direct me to different oils, the Castrol site says Edge 5/30 but the halfords site says 10/40 oil for a PD engine which it isn't.

    Can anyone advise me please?

Have a look at the "OPIE OILS" site, they are sponsors of this forum.

It only requires 505.00 for standard time/distance interval servicing which is a pretty 'nothing special' spec. It s said that using the 506.01 oil specified by the PD TDI engines may alleviate premature camshaft wear suffered on some of these cars due to i's extra zinc di-alkyldithiophosphates, so 506.01 or 507.00 is a better choice but more expensive.

Here is a good spec oil for not much money... Scroll down to PD.

I was advised by Audi (unofficially) to use the 507.00 and to change it every 5k to save the cams.

Picked up Comma in that spec for £24 (5 + 1 litres) from my local motor factors.

I would give Comma a miss as they are not even approved for PD engines on normal 505.01 spec let alone the Longlife 507 spec. I would call the Longlife as "Shortlife" if you guys choose to adhere to 20k + and 2 years "recomended" intervals.... I have my v6 tdi on 180k with absolutely no wear on the cams and i do drive hard, i use 507 Castrol Edge in every car i owned and work on.

Has any one bought from this guy on E-bay?:

    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/5-LITRES-QUANT...item4a9dbc2b28

at £35.99 it is the cheapest offer for longlife 3 I have seen, also 4 X 5 litres for £114.99
just wondered if there could be a catch?? or is it the same oil as what you would get from the dealers.

I would presume that any oil, no matter what the make, that has the VW5xx.xx number displayed on the packaging is approved for that spec. Surely it would be false advertising otherwise?

You'll be surprised how easy is to mislead people with a few carefull worded slogans: meets the xxx VW/BMW spec, recomended by BMW, etc. ! As with most things nowadays you get what you pay for and cheap oil is no exception but i believe its difficult to change your mind and its your car also, that's why people are penny pinching so they can spend a few grand when the car breaks down ! Its very easy to make an cheap oil meet a standard/viscosity norm-just throw some emulsifiers in a cheappo base stock and presto, you have an oil wich "meets" the spec. Beeing up to spec(approved by the dealer-wich cost money!) and resilient to shearing-wich is very important on a pd or other higly strung engine- is where it matters and resilience to shearing is given by the tri-ester molecules(hence the synthetic name- wich is also questionable just like the "synthetic blends" or "fully synthetic") wich are relatively costly to make compared with fosil based oils... Not every oil is the same mate !

The one I got was fully synthetic but I will take on board what you are saying. I didn't realise it was so easy for them to be so blatant with their packaging, but I suppose when you look at what the likes of the food industry get away with in advertising then I suppose it can carry across all other ones too.
So which one do you recommend then (meeting the 507.00 spec)? I refuse to buy oil from Audi out of principle because of the mark up they put on all parts and consumables so I presume the Castrol Edge is the best of the bunch?
