I had the ESP/ABS/Glow plug warning lights appear on thursday evening on the way home. Checked my brake lights and they were not working. Ran Vag com and had a 16955 fault so I replaced my Brake switch at the top of the brake. Glow plug light is now out, brake lights are working but the ABS/ESP lights are still on and yesterdaty the Airbag light came on.

Ran vag com today and found I have 01435 & 00588 faults. According to Ross Tech wiki, I found the following on 01435 fault:

    Possible Causes
    * Basic Setting not performed
    Possible Solutions
    * Perform Basic Setting

I assume that since I changed the brake switch I have to perform some settings using Vag com.

My first question is: How do I perform these basis settings?

My second question is: Would the Airbag fault be related to the Brake basic settings that I have to perform?

Again, according to Ross Tech wiki, I found the following on 00588 fault:

    Possible Causes
*Wiring from/to Airbag Igniter Driver Side (N95) faulty
*Coil Spring with Slip ring (F138) faulty
*Airbag igniter Driver Side (N95) faulty

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Update on this, I changed out the slipring yesterday and cleared all faults. The airbag fault has not come back but the ESP & ABS lights are still on. The same fault code 01435 is appearing under module 03 - ABS breaks.

Does anyone know how to carry out the Basic Settings using Vag Com?

Not 100% sure your slip ring was the problem, the fault codes you have now is the ones I got when I fitted cruise control, I had to remove the steering wheel, slip ring, etc.

Anyway the module has lost the steering angle for the ESP so the module doesn't know what position the steering wheel is at. I turn the steering lock to lock and go for a short drive, this normally calibrates the steering and should resolve your issue I hope.

I'm sure someone might come along to correct me if I'm wrong

Thanks for the responses guys but the steering angle is not the problem. I reset the steering angle after installing the replacement slip ring. True, when I checked the fault codes after resetting, all faults had gone but then fault 01435 comes back.

I'm sure its related to changing out the brake switch as I haven't touched anything else!

    Have you read this?

    http://wiki.ross-tech.com/wiki/index.php/01435

It says to change the brake pedal switch an a few other things.

you dont need to reset anything when you change the brake switch
have you checked all your brake light bulbs
that code relates to the switch
or the brake presure sensor 1 (G201)

    01435 - Brake Pressure Sensor 1 (G201)

01435 - Brake Pressure Sensor 1 (G201): No or Incorrect Basic Setting / Adaptation

    Possible Symptoms

    • Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) active
    Possible Causes

    • Basic Setting not performed
    Possible Solutions

    • Perform Basic Setting

01435 - Brake Pressure Sensor 1 (G201): Electrical Fault in Circuit

    Possible Causes

    • Brake Pedal Switch (F) faulty/jammed
    • Brake Pressure Sensor 1 (G201) faulty
    Possible Solutions

    • Check/Replace Brake Pedal Switch (F)
      • See Measuring Blocks
    • Check/Replace Brake Pressure Sensor 1 (G201)
      • ABS Hydraulic Unit (N55) may need to replaced
      • Perform Brake Pump Bleeding
      • Perform Brake Pressure Sensor 1 (G201) Basic Setting
      • Replace Brake Electronics Control Module (J104)
    • so thats what the code means

Thanks Benjie & Bez, I had seen that.

All my bulbs are working - thats why I'm putting it down to "Basic setting not performed" and wondering how to do the basic setting. There are instructions in the Ross Tech wiki for performing basis setting for the ABS brakes - I've done this and still no joy. I don't think its the ABS Hydraulic Unit or brake bleeding as the fault only came up after I replaced the brake pedal switch. Maybe the replacement switch is causing the problem?

My MkIV has operational brake lights but a symbol on the dash - chenged it and it went away.

It can't hurt to do the basic setting thing you speak of, though I have no clue about it I'm afraid!
