The bolt goes in between the two prongs. To check the distributor’s position, you need VAG-COM in Measuring Blocks 08, Group 7 where display zone 1 must read 1 or between 57 and 60 and zone 2 must read between 5 and 8. Before removing the distributor, rotate the engine by hand so that the crank is at zero degrees, the cam is at TDC number 1 and the rotor arm centre is pointing to the notch in the distributor body. Replace the distributor so that the rotor arm still points to the notch and the prongs are either side of the bolt hole. Sometimes it is necessary to remove one of the prongs to allow the distributor to be adjusted.

Why are you replacing it? They will run fine up to 5000 rpm with the hall sender unplugged.

cheers mate, ive already removed it, and given it to vw in exchange for a new one, any particular advice on installing a nwe one? also i replaced it beacuse iw was missfirng slighly and not going past 5000rpm, gave it to garage they said hall sender, and checked timing which they say it was not the timing, and thus said i need a new distributor...

I have just given you the advice on how to fit a new one!

The timing is not controlled by the distributor, it is controlled by the ECU using a signal from the crank speed sensor.

Your engine management is Simos, not Digifant.

thanks again, what is the hall sender for then? so the 5000prm cut out may not be the hall sender on the dizzy?

The 5000 rpm cut will be the hall sender, either it is not working or the distributor is out after a timing belt. All the distributor does is send the sparks in the right direction and the hall sender instructs the ECU as to the position of number 1 so as to be able to initiate sequential fuel injection.

Hi, I have just replaced my Distributor on my AGG. Not too hard, hardest part was getting the old one out. I agree with Crasher. Timing is crucial to run smoothly but its not soley based on the Dizzy. Make sure all your timing marks are aligned, refit, having made a mark in relation to your old unit and fire her up. ECU will compensate a small amount but I think you would know if you were a tooth out......I dont have access to VAG-Com but mines up n running smoothly now.....After changing.....the dizzy, the crankshaft sensor, the MAF, the water pump, all belts, lambda, filter, plugs, leads, fuel pump, fuel filter, fuel pressure regulator, all vacum lines and breathers, relays X2 and lots of scraped knuckles and swear words......Turns out the CAT was blocked.......All because of it running too rich because the coolant temp sender telling the engine it was always -40 Degrees and no one knows what there taliking about She's creeping up to the 200'000 mile mark but she's all good now.......PS.. Take the rev limiter off with a diagnostic code reader.....i did.......7000RPM+

I used a Snap-on diagnostic machine. quite an old one with the different 'personality keys'.
I think it was in 'ENGINE ELECTRICAL SYSTEMS #1'
Its an 8v but she will keep pulling till she's past the red and off the clock. Not that i like to do it often but she does get there in every gear. (Seems Easier on v-power fuel!!?) Iv seen 100mph in 3rd without valve bounce ! Not rcommended tho....
