I've been very impressed with my other half's MY2001 2.4SE Multi, very smooth and the sort of drive that I like. Not bad for £5K!

Anyway, I've decided to buy something similar. My budget is about £6-7K and looking around there are a few to choose from. An Avant is preferable but saloons seem to be better priced.

I've decided to go for a manual. I've read all the horror stories about multitronic and although my OH's 2.4 seems to have been well looked after (fluid change at 40K etc etc) I'd rather not have 2 risky prospects on the drive. Other than that, I don't know much about reliability issues on other models some some help would be appreciated.

I'm not interested in the 2.0 as it seems a bit of a slug. This leaves the 1.8T, 2.4, 2.7T and 4.2. Fuel consumption is not an issue but if I could get >30 mpg on a rum I'd be happy but could ignore it for Bose. Is the 2.5TDI as big a money pit as some reckon?

Which ones should I go for? Anything to really avoid? Is the Quattro system something that could go wrong? If I'm buying a car 10 years old or with 100K on the clock, what's worth looking out for / replacing?

Or should I bite the bullet and go for an A8 / S8?

    Thanks in advance.

The 2.5D is really not worth having as the fuel economy (the only saving grace of any diesel) is horrendous. Plus like most diesels, it is a money pit.
Always been a regret of mine that I didn't go for one of the petrol models so don't make the same mistake.

i personally would buy a diesel,i have had a 1.9tdi sport passat,my wife has a 99 a4 avant 1.9tdi 110 auto and i now have an a6 1.9tdi se,all are excellent on fuel at around 47mpg on a run and 40ish locally.never had any engine issues on either, the wifes has done 165000 miles now and still runs perfect with no use of water, oil and never lets her down.

Automatic quattros don't have a mulitronic box, they have a more reliable tiptronic.

If fuel economy isn't an issue then get the 2.7T or 4.2. Both have bags of smooth torque and power. 30mpg is a distant dream though!

The quattro drivetrain is pretty bulletproof.

Had a 2.5tdi, spent alooooot of money on it, dint buy one unless its very low mileage and lots of history!

I now have a 2.7t, best car ive ever owned or driven!

250hp as stock, mapped upto 326hp with the tip box is awesome, nice and lazy when in town but changes into a totally different car when you kick its head in! lol

If economy is not an issue, then either the 4.2 with 300hp or the 2.7t, spend £200 and have 320ish hp!

Or if money isnt an issue an S6!

If your ever in the north east feel free to give me a shout and a drive in mine!
