    Hello,

I was just wondering if somebody could help me with a problem. My nearside windscreen wiper and my rear wiper have both suddenly stopped working. I have no idea where to start with diagnosing the problem.

Could somebody please point me in the right direction?

    Thanks,

    Rob

Have you checked the fuses? or relays? i put my bet on the relay.

First. open the drivers side fuse compartment, that being next to the steering wheel as you open the door. Make sure engine is turned off and key is removed, remove all fuses one by one and make sure none have blown.

Next if the above does not work. Open bonnet and check fuses in the black box on the right hand side, there will be some relays in there that may also be the problem.

If the above does not work, go back into the car, remove the storage compartment located just underneath to the right hand side, open the comparment door and push the horizontal sides of the door together and pull down. there you will see some extra relays, check or get them checked also.

Sorry i don't exactly know which relay controls the wiper stalks otherwise i wouldn't be explaining everything

    Hey thanks for the reply.

The rear wiper has just started working again but still only the drivers side front is working.

Thanks for the advice about the fuse but ive checked the manual and there appears to be just one fuse controlling both front wipers. If the fuse had gone surely then they would be both not working?

    Thanks,

    Rob.

What are you saying? 1 of the front wipers work? There are 2 linkages inside the front motor, one of them must of snapped??

I had another look and basically, the bolt at the base of the wiper is showing, the other one has what looks like a plastic cover on it. The one on the broken one moves around when I turn them on so looks like the motor is working ok, its just not moving the wiper!?

Dont worry about the bolt showing as the plastic cap fell off or wasnt put back on....

Yes motor is working of course, without wipers running, can you freely move the wiper that doesnt move?

    Hi,

Yes, I can move the wiper freely by hand.

There is your fault you need a new wiper motor kit, cheap on ebay....

Even though the motor works, inside there are pullys, one of them have snapped. Changing the motor is fairly easy, if you want to go ahead with it, check my guide.

https://www.vwaudiforum.co.uk/forum/s...ad.php?t=94388 here you will find out how to remove the motor, fitting the new one is reverse of removing.

I don't think you need a new wiper motor. I've never come across one with pullys in it, snapped or otherwise?

I'd try this first anyway. It wont cost you a penny and just might work.
Switch the wipers on and off to ensure that the motor is in the park position.
There should be a 13mm nut on that bolt you can see at the base of the wiper arm.
If the nut is there, get yourself a 13mm socket and a ratchet and retighten the nut. Recheck and see if the wiper is now working.
If the nut is missing, go to B&Q and get a new one.

    Jim.
