Disconnect the battery overnight, it may just clear itself, brace yourself for a big bill though, the thing you describe is the same as the steering shaft ecu unit failure, and it's about £1000 to fix.

17925 (P1517) Motronic Engine Control Module (ECM) Power Supply Relay - J271 Electrical malfunction in circuit.

I need your cars engine code, is it BKP?

Does the cooling fan start to run after a few seconds if the ignition is left on?

I have had this fault before when the relay on the electronics box next to the battery fails or the command power supply to the relay fails due to the tiny 0.35-mm wire from the ECU snapping but this causes the cooling fan to run.

I can’t check from home but I think that is the code we get when an injector fails.

You can eliminate it being the relay by unplugging the J271 relay (it has 458 printed on top, in between fuses 8 and 9) and bridging out the terminals on the plate that correspond to the two large terminals on the relay (30 and 87) on the plate (sockets 1 and 2).

    Hi Crasher,
the only relay fitted in the fuse box beside the battery is marked - 064021B
I left the ingnition on for a couple of minutes and the fan didn't come.
Shall i remove the relay and short-out the terminals as suggested?

    Engine number is BKP 183735

I wonder if it is an electrical fault due to a failed antishudder valve. When this fails shut, you can't start the engine. If you take the air intake pipe off to the egr valve you will see if the antishudder plate is open when the ignition is turned on. If it isn't, just wedge it open and see if it starts. I only say this because failed antishudder valves sometimes throw up silly electrical fault codes.

I have done a few searches of the forum and their seems to be prolems with the Seimens fuel pump, could this be related in any way? or do the fault codes rule the pump out?

I think it will turn out to be an injector as Crasher says. The "17925 (P1517) Motronic Engine Control Module (ECM) Power Supply Relay - J271 Electrical malfunction in circuit" code is misleading because it only applies to petrol engines. I think the code reader finds the nearest code to match the fault. There are a number of electrical/fuel system faults that give odd codes like this.

Guided Fault Finding lists 17925 under mot6000 but only versions 000, 001, 002 and 003 not 007 so I think the code reader has mis-interpreted the code. I think you need to get the car recovered to a garage who can check the codes properly and go from there. I will try and look into the code we had from the last one of these we did a few weeks back.
