    Hi Guys,.
My trusted 2006/56 Passat 2.0 tdi let me down tonight

Fuel was low so i pulled into garage and stuck in £20.00...drove back on to dual carraigway, about 1 mile up the road the car cut out and engine managment light came on...tried to start car and nothing happened...engine turned over but never fired, i checked my receipt to double check i put deisel in...seems ok...called out break down service and grease monkey wasn't interested in trying to do anything, didn't have a code reader so my car is now in the driveway feeling poorly.....any one got any ideas????
    Any advise appreciated...

The lift pump may have failed but you need a code read.

Chatting to a workmate tonight (nightshift) he told me about hearing about some garage that had its diesel tanks filled with petrol by the delivery tanker, then I read your post. He didnt know what part of the country it was and it is very much a long shot but you never know, might be worth checking with the filling station that there has not been anyone come back complaining. Might be worth tapping a little bit of fuel off at the filter and checking that it actually is diesel, would not recommend turning the engine over any more till you are sure though as petrol is not good for your fuel pump!!

The wrong fuel was at Sainsburys Wantage (Oxfordshire), but it could well have happened else where. Luckily in this case Sainsburys (or their supplier) are picking up the bill.

Could be an injector gone...hope not. Don't forget an old vag-com lead won't work on a b6. You have to have a genuine can-bus ross-tech cable and latest software.

Thinking about it, it is very likely to be an injector, we have done a few now like this and I hope for your sake it isn’t as it can get extremely expensive. The symptoms and the car match but the only way to find out is see what fault code comes up. I can’t remember the exact code and I can’t look it up at home but it is something along the lines of “implausible injector power feed or signal”. The injectors on those engines are only available genuine as far as we have been able to establish and cost about £450 each plus a couple of hours labour and it is recommended to replace the injector harness, which adds nearly another £100. This is necessary as to diagnose which injector is at fault you have to disconnect each one in turn and see if the engine starts and unplugging the harness ends without the special VAG tools causes the ends to fall to bits. This is done with the cam cover removed and is messy when it does fire up. One of my friends who also runs a garage had this happen to the same customers car three times and he ended up replacing all four injectors in three stages as when the third failed they both said “sod it, do the fourth as well”. Because of this, we warn customers this may happen but £2500 is a lot of money…

It is worth noting that these new injectors must be fitted very carefully; there is a special installation procedure which if not adhered to can damage the injector and the cylinder head.
