I have recently bought a 2003 Mk4 GT TDi 130, and it has 18" alloys on, but has not had any other changes, ie the springs, so it looks odd and the ride is not too comfortable.

I'm thinking of changing the wheels back to the original size, to improve the ride quality etc.

What size would the original wheels and tyres be on a GT TDi 130?

    Cheers

    Matt

I have just encouraged a customer to take the 18’s off his Golf 4 1.6 as they were running the ride. Some 18’s are so heavy that they make the car feel awful. The original wheel size for a UK specification 130PS Golf 4 GT TDI are the 6Jx15 ET38 Avus II, VW part number 1J0 601 025 Q Z31 with 195/65 R15 91V tyres.

Adding to crasher's post, the factory fit option was Santa Monica 7J x 17 with 225/45 R17 tyres includes sports suspension, or another option was "sports pack" lowered suspension with Montreal II 6 1/2J x 16 with 205/55 16 tyres

Ride quality aside those 18 inchers will not do your gearbox any favours in the long run. Id get them off straight away. I've the standard 16 inch factory alloys on the Bora .

They were just about able to accommodate the 312mm brake upgrade I completed a few months back... Just !

    Thanks for the help guys

So how do i know which wheels were the original ones for my car, and which should i go for?

I suppose the difference between 15, 16 & 17"s would be noticable and crucial to the ride quality?

Dealer should be able to tell you, or possibly input your option codes found in your handbook or sticker in the boot into this website, avus II is a good bet.

Your car was factory fitted with the Avus II wheel as I showed in post 2.

I have a set of 4 standard 15" alloys straight off a 2003 GT TDi 130 for sale. The tyres need replacing though. Collection in Welshpool, Mid-Wales
