    This forum is called 'Golf Mk4 1999-2004' but I'm seeing plenty of 1998 Mk4's on eBay - did they start production early or does the 1999 refer to the model year not the actual production dates?

    Well, according to wiki - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volkswagen_Golf_Mk4, the Mk4 was introduced in 1997. I would have though Sept 1998 or so, as I have seen S-reg Golf's. Can't say I've seen (or noticed) any earlier Mk4's.
    2003 VW Golf Est 1.9 TDI 130 (gone but not forgotten after 367,000 miles)
    2006 Audi A3 2.0 TDI Sport 140

    There is an 'R' Reg Golf Mk4 at the bottom of my street and I drive a sep 98 on an 'S' plate, mines only got 79k on it so it doesnt feel as old as it is!!

    If memory serves me right the Golf mk4 was released in germany around Oct 1997 and it appeared over here around April/May 1998.

    The first ones where on an "R" plate.
