Hello again - seems as though my last post about the Clutch slave had you all beat. My problem was that I was unable to select gears when engine running, but ok when engine off. The car would also creep when clutch depressed. Well we've past that one now. Changed both clutch master and slave, as well as completely renewing the fluid. The thrust bearing, clutch and pressure plate all seemed fine, but have replaced anyway! The gearbox is now on the workbench - but it all looks fine. I'm asking if anyone can point to anything else to look at before I put it all back together. Wife going crazy as this is the 3rd week without a car!!

I had a problem on my previous car (it was a series 1 80 quattro) where I had a similar situation where the clutch wouldn't release properly.
It turned out to be the clutch release lever (the slave cylinder actuates this lever which in turn operates the clutch). The problem was the the lever was wearing at the slave cylinder end resulting in reduced clutch release movement. I had to fit a new clutch release lever and all worked perfectly again.

Not sure if your car would have a similar issue but worth a check whilst it's still apart
