last week i had a bump in my car a discovery hit me from behind
my car has now been taken to the main audi dealership for a quote on repairs (1999 a4 tdi estate)
my question is have i any rights to refuse the car be repaired. i know when it comes to selling it on that once a car has been hit its never going to be 100% right. there will alway be some tell tales sighns that the cars been damaged in the past and this could prove harder to sell on.
as for the damage there were a few kinks in the boot floor and the rear door gaps on one side had closed up and the whole rear panel pushed in.

    any sujestions anyone

I think you can refuse to accept the car to be reapair, thats why you get cat c and cat d write offs. one is for uneconomic and ther other is customer refusal. I cat remeber which one is which though.

cat c and d are normaly to do with the age of the vehicle rather then the damage as far as i know. newer cars are classed as cat d, cars over 3 year old are classed as cat c and need a vic check. which is a scam in the first place as it will pass the vic check even before its been repaired in some cases

No, you can't refuse it, as I guess its a "possible write off" pending the inspection via an engineer.

If you asked for the claim to go through, then if the repairs come to 60% of your vehicle it'll be a write off, (50% for older vehicles )

You can choose to cancel the claim with your insurance if you wish to keep the car as it is, but that HAS to be done PRIOR to the engineer doing an inspection and confirming it a write off / repairable.

With regards top Cat C & D write off :

Category A - Must be crushed. All of it.
Category B - Vehicle may not be returned to road. Parts may be sold.
Category C - Repairable. Possibly structural damage. Cost of damage (at dealer prices and labour rates) is more than book value of vehicle.
Category D - Repairable. Probably non-structural damage. May have been economic to repair, but insurer doesn't want to.
Category X - Repairable. Minor Danage.

In more detail for what your looking at :

Category C - Repairable salvage. Usually applies to vehicles with significant (structural) damage, where cost of repairs exceeds book value. Can be sold complete to Trade or Public. Recorded as "Category C" at DVLA. Category C vehicles' V5 documents are returned to DVLA. You re-apply, to DVLA or at your local VRO, for registration on the original identity once you have fixed it up, MOTed it and want to Tax it. Re-registration removes the Category C classification, but evidence it was at one time Category C remains on the vehicle's record at DVLA (and HPI and AA and the others).

There is a difference between cars (and presumably vans, lorries, caravanettes..) and bikes when re-registering. Motorcycles do not need a VIC inspection, cars do.

Cars (and vans...) sold for repair but must now have VIC inspection before returning to the road.

Category D - Repairable salvage. Minimal damage, probably not structural, but insurer does not want to repair, even though it might be economic to do so. Often stolen and recovered after claim has been paid. Or for unusual models or grey imports where the difficulty of obtaining new parts hinders a quick repair. Does not need VIC inspection to return to road. Recorded with HPI, AA, and the like.

    Ref to VIC Checks :

VIC inspection - Straight from VOSA's web site "[The VIC] will involve comparing the vehicle presented against information held by DVLA, such as the vehicle identification number, make, model, colour and engine number. The VIC will also compare the record of previous accident damage with evidence of damage repair as well as checking other components to confirm the age and identity of the vehicle."
Officially, the VIC does not check roadworthiness. If any significant defects are present, they can prevent it being used, but it is not a check of vehicle condition or roadworthiness. VIC tets centres in major towns.

    Hope this helps.

When I came off the bike, I made sure the insurance guy who came round to look at it knew that I wanted to keep the bike and would be happy to fix it up myself. Whaddyano, I bought the bike back off them for not too much, fixed it back up myself and happily rode round on it for a while.

When I rolled the corsa (it's a corsa, it was the best thing I could do to it), the guy at the garage actually asked me would I want it back or would i rather it got written off so I could get another one so I said I didn't want it. Got the money and went and bought a proper car.
