    The E class is a longer car then the Golf being a large saloon however I think the front of the golf looks wider and bigger, could be the design that makes me it look like that

    IIRC, the Golf VI is about 4.2m long which is actually fairly compact for a car in its class these days. I think the current Focus, Mazda 3, Leon and new Astra are all longer, to name a few off the top of my head.
