    Dear All

Thanks for reading this thread and I hope you can help me find the best approach for getting a spare key for my 2006 Passat.

Basically I have just bought the car and it only has the one key (see signature) I am informed the only option is to go to VW which is fine but if I can save some money in the process or there is another way please let me know.

I have done several searches through the forums but am not getting hits for this key type, if there are open threads please paste the links for me to have a look.

    Thank you for looking

    Regards

    BB

Hi mate nice to have you on board.
I'm very limited in this field but I'll start things off and I'm sure others will doubt add to it and make corrections if needed.

In theory you can buy a second hand fob say from feabay and then get it re-programmed for your car.

You will also need to get a new key blade in case of fob failure.

Sorry Chris. You can't do that with a B6. Second hand keys are useless.

To get the car to accept the transponder chip it has to be programmed. You can't reprogramme an old transponder. Ther are a few specialists who can fit a new transponder in an old key case but you will struggle to find one you can trust. B6 keys are pretty much dealer only and expensive.

That a downer for a cheap replacement in that case. Makes you wonder about all these ebay listing claiming they can be re-programmed. I hope folk who fall for it manage a full refund. Thanks for the warning Martin.

    Hello every one

As a follow up I thought I would post the final cost of replacing the key blade the remote unit. Purchased on my behalf by my car dealer from VW agent in Derby for the grand total £136.38 inc vat.

The dealer paid for the transponder coding

    Regards

    Vince
