Remote central locking problem

We have a 1997 TDi sport.
It has a problem with the remote central locking. basically it doesnt work all of the time.
Some time it will work on the first click of the remote, other times you have to click it many times before it responds. We have given up using it and just use the key instead.

When it does respond its fine, all doors unlock or lock. I've put a new battery in the key, but thats had no affect at all.

Footwell is dry in case you were going to suggest water ingress.

Any ideas??

If the transmitters (fobs) are ok the next thing to try is the receiver i would say.

Makes sense, but where is the receiver????

In the box under the passenger footwell?

Mine was doing the same (and more obscure stuff) which was all down to the drivers door pcb being duff

Err....well.....not quite

I got all geared up to do it, then discovered it was still covered by the warranty so I didn't even get my hands dirty!

Andy O over on UKPassats has done it though, and I'm sure he found it quite straightforward. Good practice for soldering skills

That was lucky, our Passat is almost 10 years old so no warranty.

I'm not worried about the soldering. I'm more worried that I'll dismantle the door and locks then never be able to get it back together again!
