New 2010 A6 Le mans 2.0 TDI (170) or 3.0TDI?

Hi

I've just test driven the 3.0 TDI Quattro Le mans Saloon and the 2.0 TDI version and I'm stuck. Was going to place an order today but left the show with head in a mess.
Age old, head says one thing heart wants another!

The 3.0 was really fast and great in the bends and the 2.0 was ok performance wise.

Over 3-4 years will the 3.0 be really worth the additional £5.5k upfront cost?
The 2.0 is comfortable within budget but the 3.0 is above budget but affordable.

Question:
Is the Quattro drivetrain any good (£5k good) in poor weather (snow & ice)?

Is the Quattro system known to be reliable or are there expensive fixes lurking to get me?

Well the 3.0 lose more money than the 2.0?

Is chipping the 2.0 an option for better performance?

I'm coming from a Passat V5 (170 bhp) and wanted a marked improvement performance wise from my next car.

From what I've read from other posters on here, the quattro system fitted to the 3.0TDi seems to be very good in wintry conditions, and pretty reliable too. My 2.0TDI was OK in the snow - but then my front tyres were getting a bit low on tread during the snowy spell, so it's hardly surprising they didn't grip that well.

I believe the 2.0TDi 170 can be increased to around 210bhp with a remap, which should make a nice difference, and bring it closed to the 3.0's performance.

My mate has the 3.0 and i have just ordered the 2.0 le mans multitronic

Whilst the power difference is obvious i really could not afford the extra 5/10k for the bigger engine or qauttro

i was actually very pleasantly suprised with how 'nippy' the 170 was coming from an 02 bmw 330d. it will be more than ample for me

put it this way aswell if you do go for the 2.0 there is no point going for quattro with only 170 bhp. unless you are constantly in bad driving conditions

I had exactly the same decision to make, albeit with a couple of used (<6mths old, <10k) Le Mans's...

In the end I've opted for the 2.0 TDI (170) Le Mans - I just didn't think the extra price up front for the 3.0 Quattro (or even a 2.7 Quattro) was worth it when I realised that, based on the 30k miles or so I do each year, they would also cost me a grand or so more to run.

The power and the Quattro system would have been nice, but it's not like we have winters like the one just past every year and the 170 did (just) have enough grunt for overtaking etc and was nice and smooth. I also tried the 2.0 TDIe (136) just to rule it out...which I did. Immediately.

The dealer I've been speaking to (who had both a 2.0 and a 2.7 that I was thinking about, so who was hopefully being largely objective!), also said that the 2.0 TDI's have the strongest residuals. Economy beating performance on peoples lists of what they look for in a used car? What has the world come to!!!

It's driving me mad, couldn't do any work at the office today.

I'm leaning toward the 2.0 as well. Had a quick thought about the 2.7 with a chip may have done the trick, but as someone said earlier the 2.0 will have better residual.

With fuel prices going through the clouds (already broken through the roof ) the 2.0 looks even more sensible.
Will probably defo chip / remap when it arrives.

Will post again when I put pen to paper.

Took me a while but placed an order today for the 3.0 Quattro .
I just could not bear buying something I didn't really want(2.0 Auto without Quattro).

I can now get a plug in box or remap and have a real rocket with 590 torque.

A couple of dealers said stock allocation is fast drying up, I've been quoted mid July for delivery as it had to be a factory order.
Even internet discounter can't get deliveries within 16+ weeks if they can get it at all.
The dealer also reckons the current subsidy ends on Wednesday.

have been toying with the idea of changing my deal - (3 year pcp - 2.2k deposit - 13.5k final payment)

i can switch to a 2 year contract lease on the same price but it includes maitainance and only paying 1.4k deposit (which i would definately lose)

or

2 year pcp for £20 more a month on the same deposit and 17.5k final payment (works out £500 more over 2 years)

i think ill leave the 2 year lease because the deposit is nearly as much anyway and with only 16, 000 miles over 2 years i should not need any maintanance

but seriously thinking about the 2 year pcp

i want to increase my chances of getting some of my deposit back

is the car likely to be worth more than 13.5k after 3 years or more than 17.5k after 2 years ?

Unless you are following a long distance service schedule you will need a service which is £300ish on an A6 within the 2 year period.

Do the PCP quotes have a GFV in them? If so you don't really have anything to worry about. I wouldn't count on a PCP having equity 2/3rds into the period, especially as the new model will be out by then.

But Audi as well as BMW have both said the manufacturers have reworked the final values to try and keep people buying the next car (salesmen will say anything).

Consider £17.5k + £3.5k (dealer markup) and you have a forecourt price of £20,995. Check what current 2 year olds are going for and you have an indicator (only an indicator). You may want to factor a percentage for the new model being available.

well my mileage should be no more than 16k for 2 years and is multitronic so maybe i would get some back

what im scared of is it loosing a lot in its 3rd year, maybe the extra £20 a month will be worth it
