    Hi All

What is the gearbox code on the AUM 1.8t GTI? Its a 2001 reg. Would the box be able to hold up to the extra torque that a remap would put out?

    Cheers
    Gerry

EGY, EDS, JEP, JEG to name a few, it is the 02J series which is a development of the 02A. The box is man enough up to around 250PS and then it starts to suffer, 280PS often hurts them but the clutch lets go at well less than that, any more than 220PS through the standard clutch/DMF has to be handled carefully or the cutch will literally explode after a short time. A single mass flywheel conversion and VR6 Golf 3 clutch can cope up to around 230PS without much trouble even when abused and even 280ish if a Scahs Sporting knee joint when killer treated with respect. I have seen the 02J box strip 5th gear when overloaded and weld 1st synchro to the hub when hammered from a standstill. My Octavia VRS is putting out 210PS and the clutch is a standard LUK unit and has been fine but I have replaced more of those clutches than any other type in my 25 years working on Golf’s.
