I am looking for some advice please,

We have a VW Golf Mk5 55 plate and we think its about time we get it serviced. My wife has just told me that the last time we serviced it was August 2008. The mileage is now 35647 can anyone advise us what service we need please.

There are two service regimes for the Golf - a longlife one which means you get it serviced every two years or 20,000 miles. The other is a simple time or mileage system where you get it serviced every twelve months or 10,000 miles, whichever comes first.

The longlife system is designed for cars that do highish mileages per annum and uses special longlife oil. The time or mileage system is used for cars that do smallish mileages - 10,000 or less.

I suspect your car has been set up for longlife - otherwise a service indicator would have appeared on the instrument panel by now. If you are doing less than 10,000 miles a year, you should probably be on time or mileage. The previous owner of my car was on longlife but I am now on time or mileage as I do a lowish annual mileage and a lot of short journeys. I wouldn't be happy with two year old oil in these circs.

The whole system is explained in the handbook. Might be worth checking with a dealer or a VW specialist for advice.

How many miles have you covered since the last service ? 15k (based on if your last service was @ 20k miles? )

the post above seems to cover all info for you... just one thing to add, the Cambelt is due at 5 years or 60k miles... so it may be worth you thinking about that sometime soon..

    hi
I too have a 55 reg golf, it has 134k on it though. For my money no car should go more than 12 months/15k max between oil changes. Get it changed asap with fully synthetic.

I guess he means/thinks 5yrs/60k is not the change interval for a pterol engine.

I would still recommend doing the water pump and Cam belt on a petrol at 60k miles or 5 years too.

    Thank you

Most, if not all FSI engines (and poss non FSI petrol), are chain driven and generally the chain does not need replacing during the life of the engine - I have the 1.6 FSI and although I am not mechanically minded, this is something I have picked up over time and through other posts. I thought that this was known by those who are more expert than me, but I am sure others will comment further ?
