Noticed a strange sound like a squeaking coming from under the bonnet left hand side where the belt is. When I turned the air con of (econ mode) I got a loud continuous "Urgh" sound. The only way to stop it was to switch the engine off. the fans appear to spin fast and won't go into slow mode.

Have checked the resistance in both and they are both below 10ohms as suggested infact i get know resistance at all.meaning the resistors are ok for the twospeed setting.

I checked the thermostat switch.this works for the two speeds so no problems there. However when the air con is on the fans don't spin. Can anyone help?

really interested to know what the urgh noise is. Could this be a dead compressor? I've noticed that on the end of the compressor wheel is a disc with a locking nut on the end. This disc sits loose should this be like this? I've tried tightening the nut but it just spins presume there must be a spindle inside it? Can anyone shed some light on this?

The end of the compressor is a magnetic clutch. That freewheels until the air conditioning comes on. Have you felt the compressor kicking in. If the pressure is low the compressor won't kick in and the fans won't come on. You may have, low pressure, faulty pressure sensor, fault magnetic clutch, failed compressor or a wiring fault. Good luck.

Im thinking the air con outer clutch has seperated from the center it did this on mine you will see the magnet pull the clutch in to engage but the pump does not turn.

The inner and outer are connected by 3 metal strips and these break, I had to buy a complete air con clutch unit just to get the outer part£150 and i think that was a favour as i had been cutting the grass for the Seat garage!
When its in econ mode it just sits and rubs and makes a noise.
Its a bit tight for room to change in situ on the TDI but can be done.
