    Hi all

    Im new to the A4 Tdi, and need a bit of info

    Afaik the early ones had either a 90bhp or 110bhp engine?

    If so, how can you tell which is which? Ive seen a few advertised locally, and the owners tend to just say "i dont know" when asked what version the engine is.

    I dont want to buy one thinking its the 110bhp engine when it isnt :s

    The only way to make sure is to check the engine code, it will be on the sticker in the spare wheel well in the boot, and on the block.

    You can also tell from looking at the engine, as all the 110 versions had a VNT turbo, and all the european 90's had a normal turbo with waste-gate.

    The best B5 A4 TDI to go for apart from the 110 VE engine version, is the 115bhp PD engined TDI from 08/98 > 09/01

    VE B5 A4 110bhp TDI engine codes are:

    AFN, APD, AVG,

    PD B5 A4 115bhp TDI engine codes are:

    AJM, ATJ

    If there is a sticker then the engine output is right there in KW.

    Lol, yes, Lex Luthor is right.

    110bhp = 81kW

    115bhp = 85kW

    Thats great, hopefully ill have a better idea of what im looking at.

    Its really a 110 im after, the PD engined cars have quite a premium on them over the earlier 110s.

    I think I would be looking at chipping the car if I got one, I see superchips can up the output to 130ish, but more importantly there is a good hike in torque.

    This sounds like the stock reply from someone trying to shift the lower bhp version! If I were trying to sell my 110bhp A4 I wouldn't profess ignorance on this feature.

    Is there much difference to drive between the 90 and the 110 versions? Id like something that has a wee bit of kick, but I still need a diesel.

    Hence why I would think about chip tuning.

    There doesnt seem to be much difference between a chipped 90 and a chipped 110 according to superchips?

    They are basically the same engine, except the 110 has a better boost system and larger injectors.

    Put 110 (0.205) injectors/nozzles in a 90 model and you will be pushing out almost the same power.

    Larger 0.216 injectors alone should see a little over 110bhp.
