A6 3.0TDI Le Mans - 07 - Suspension knocking...?

Can anyone confirm on any A6 model, a knocking noise, detected at low speed on uneven, rough roads?

It is a muffled sound, a muted rattle coming from the rear and occurs when hitting pot hols, speed bumps etc..? I have checked with car empty of all objects so I am sure it is "part of the car'.

For those who have technical nouse here, any ideas as to cause?

As you know, the dealer, although to-date good [Dulwich Audi, London SE21], will more than likely not hear this noise [On the third occasion of informing them of a dashboard rattle, it was only identified with technician in car with me].

Any thoughts or advice appreciated.

Hi Mark,

Is this an Avant or a saloon? Is the noise from underneath or inside the car? If it's inside, it could be:

Folding rear seat not properly latched,
Jack or wheelbrace not properly stowed in the boot,
Spare wheel not fully tightened down,
Amp/dvd drive loose in the cradle
Foreign object in the spare wheel well or behind the left/right luggage compartment covers

If it's an Avant, it could be the luggage cover too.

I checked all these on mine recently in the quest to find my squeak/rattle (except the luggage cover as I have a saloon). Sorry - probably loads of useless suggestions, but at least it gives you something to rule out...

Mine is also a saloon and have double-checked those items [just now] and all seems fine.

It sounds like it comes from underneath the car, remote from the boot or cabin. It is not so much a light rattle as you might encounter with a loose object, rather a knock, muffled, and non-metallic.

I had another noise, a shake, metallic sounding, that did come from the folding rear seats, resolved with WD40 on the bars and hooks that secure the seat when upright.

Thanks for your suggestions though. As you say, a process of elimination. My old A4 never had any of these...!

Hmmmmm.....I seem to be having these issues on my A6.

Its really starting to bug me. The rear seat on the passenger side does seem loose and certaoinly may form part of the problem.
Its going back into Audi shortly for them to finalise the repair done recently as well as a paint "detail" so they'll look at it for me then.

Some good sound avice from MF as usual though..............

Spooky! I had a thudding noise from the rear of my new C7 over uneven roads, and went through the list I wrote back then for the C6. Nothing was loose in the car, though. It turns out the supplying dealer hadn't located the rear bump stops properly after removing the transport blocks. Sometimes you have to admit defeat and ask your dealer to help. My local dealer was brilliant, sorting it out on a Saturday morning after I called them out of the blue. Not their mistake, but they fixed it anyway.
