It depends firstly on the age of the car. If it was a pre-2009 facelift model, it was probably fitted with either Bose or MMI High or MMI Basic Plus, all of which which come with a boot-mounted amplifier and 10-speaker audio system. The cars with just MMI Basic do not have the amp.
If it was a post-2009 facelift model, it was most likely the radio unit mounted in the boot.
