Hello, I own a 94 Audi Cabriolet (2.8, V6, automatic). The problem with the car is that it stalls from time to time, either when in gear or either in Park or Neutral. I have noticed that when the car is on and in park or neutral for about a minute or two it stalls (this only seems to happen when the car has already reached its operating temperature). After it stalls, I turn it back on and it will idle just fine (about 800-900RPMS). If I leave it in Park or neutral it will stall after some time. However, the funny part is that after I restart the car if I put it into gear right away (be it reverse or Drive), the cars RPMS decrease to 4000RPMS or so and it stalls immediately while in gear. The car will do this and I have to hold my foot on the accelerator to keep the car from stalling. At stop lights this is a pain. But its even more dangerous because the car will sometimes stall while I'm driving and I let my foot off the accelerator as I'm coming to a stop. The only time it goes away is after the car has been off for sometime. The problem is intermittent as well. I haven't been able to pinpoint a pattern. My Dad speculates that maybe an air valve is not taking air in and the car stalls. But we have not found a solution. If anybody has come across this type of problem or can speculate as to what is going on. Please do let me know. Any feedback is appreciated. Thank you!

does anyone have a picture of this valve in situ ?

I have a 98 v6 Manual that seems to be doing the same thing.( random cut out during idle)

Is it just a case of taking it off and giving it a good clean or throw away and get another one ?

    See Idle Valve N71

I would also check the throttle body/butterflies are clean, also make sure the intake rubber boot is sealing onto the throttle body properly.

So at first my dad and I tried removing and cleaning out the idle control valve with carburetor cleaner and making sure all the contacts were clean. This seemed to work for some time. But the problem came back. Finally, after posting my problem on this forum and having 2 people tell it's definitely the idle control valve, we just put a new one in. The car has been working great ever since!
