is it normal to have a fair bit of cruddy oil coming from the pipe from the intercooler to the turbo, on the right side of the engine as you look at it (rhd) its coming from the pipe union and upon opening this there is a fair amount of oil in the pipe (not enough to pour out but enough)

Quite normal, some is from the breather and some from the turbo but nothing to worry about. There are thicker O rings from VW to stop it coming out if it bothers you.

If you haven't already done so, it mght be worth pulling the join apart to ensure the alloy male end connector hasn't got any holes worn into it as a result of the retaining clip rubbing through.
