The drivers side electric window on my girlfriends 99 Polo drops down and has to be put back in place by opening the door and physically lifting the glass back into position. Then hope it does not drop. Not ideal.
The window action had been getting increasingly worse prior to this, with a helping hand needed to raise the glass.
    Any ideas?
    Cheers

    Hi Dave,

    You will need to remove the door panel to sort it out ;
    1) remove inside plastic cover for door mirror (just pulls off)
    2) unscrew door lock indicator
    3) prise off door pull outer cover with small screwdriver, its just held with push in locators, remove the 2 Phillips screws which you now see.
    4) starting at bottom pull out the door panel to unclip the pop studs & work way round to top front & back, the door panel should then just pull out of the black full length window wiper strip.
    5) unplug adjustable mirror plug & panel should be free to set aside.
    6) This leaves you looking at a noise reduction panel with wires going through at upper front, slide out of retaining clip & unplug them, then remove screws holding the plastic speaker mounting 6 x i think, unplug speaker & set to side.
    7) What i did next was run a stanley blade round the noise panel just inside the pop studs, this leaves a bit of black mastic holding the panel for refitting, ease off the panel gently without tearing it & that reveals the inner door & its workings.
there is a window slide front & rear with 10mm bolts clamping the glass one of which may have loosened or it may be that one has come adrift from the actual Up/Dn slide that the motor operates, if you lower the window slowly you will see the problem.

If you need to remove the lifter system from the car you can bench test it by 12 V feed to one motor terminal & earth to other, reverse conns woks the other way Up/Dn etc

    Should be straightforward from there.
BTW I just had to do this last week Thats how i know !

    Good Luck

I will have a crack at that.
Your detailed response is much appreciated.

I have been meaning to update this thread since my last posting so here goes...

The red plastic 'collar' should be sat in the black housing as in the second photo. As you can see in the last photo it is well out of place. The cable had started to work its way into the housing between the two surfaces.

It took two of us to wrestle it back into position while trying to keep the cable in position at various parts of the mechanism.

I completely forgot to take a picture of the after situation until we had put it all away and we were not about to take the panel off again.

    Cheers

    Dave
