    Hello, Just bought my first VW its an LT 35 2.8TDI , Can you tell me if this engine has a timing chain or belt , What the change out frequency ? .... Also all the lights on the dash come on when you first brake after starting .... any help is appreciated

    Hi 128mc i believe the lt35 2.8 has gears (cogs) not belts

    Yes,it`ll be the 4 cylinder engine (which looks like it powered the ARK !).

    Alan02 are the crafters still belts or have they gone to chains or gears do you know

    Its still basically the same engine as in the LT35`s but modified a bit for emissions,so its still belt driven.

    thats a pity, as they are quite a strong engine, so its still going to be the belt from crank to cam that's going to let them down again if owner not aware of the pitfalls.

    didnt the early models have a 5 pot tdi chain driven engine the same as the merc sprinter? iv seen one!!!

    No,its the 4 pot thats gear driven,174BHP.5 pot belt,never seen a chain 5 pot.

    oblioi, when i brought my merc sprinter last year the sales rep at merc was looking at my lt and passed a comment of " some vw lt's had merc engine's in them as vw had a shortage of engine's at one time", not sure if there is any truth in what he said did'nt say when either, maybe this is what you have seen,
