I posted some time ago about the same subject but the problem still persists on my daughters 2006 1.4S Golf. The exhaust emission warning light keeps coming on albeit intermittently. A local mechanic checked it with his diagnostics computer and said that it was the fan sensor at fault. The fan is on most of the time and the car is using excessive fuel. The mechanic spoke to the local VW dealer who informed him that 3 sensors control the fan and it was a case of replacing each one till the faulty one has been located. One has been replaced but the warning light keeps coming on. The sensor that was replaced cost £28 plus fitting together with the cost of it being diagnosed and it's still faulty. Can anyone confirm this about the 3 sensors and can they be bought anywhere else, aftermarket ones from other than a VW dealer? If I were to replace the other 2 myself would the fault light need resetting? Apologies for all the questions. Thanks in anticipation.

the fan control unit in the fan itself play up and have been modified
the fan can run when cold and can run when ignition turned off for a good length of time
if your fault is with the fan control unit it will most probably be the fan itself
IVE CHANGED SEVERAL FOR THIS FAULT!

I had a problem with the exhaust warning light (as VW calls it) also called emmisions warning light. I took it to a mechanic who told me one of my pistons was misfiring. If the car jerks at neutral/gear one until gas is applied then it maybe the same problem. The mechanic then wittled it down to one of the three problems.

It can be either the Injectors, spark plugs or coil pack.

In my case it was the coil pack on cylinder 4 which misfired. Eventually I got an OEM coil pack from VW for £32 and it works perfectly fine now.

However get a diagnostic done and fined out the VAG code means and take it to a decent mechanic to deal with it.

    I hope this helps.
