But even the Golk Mk7 is out in 2012!
Absolutely. But in early 2010 I'd still take the Golf. Or wait until the new A3 is out and haggle for a huge discount on the current one/buy a new A3.

Well, having owned an A3 (albeit 2.0T version) before I got the Golf, I would say definitely get the Audi !

The A3 looks far more classy with the latest styling tweaks (IMO), and is perhaps slightly better finished inside.

However, there is the issue of the new model A3 coming out in 2011. I was given visibility of the Audi roll-out schedule recently, which shows the A3 due for release Oct 2010. However, the schedule has slipped by about 5 months, and the A3 won't now appear until early 2011 in Germany and probably Summer 2011 in the UK. (The A1 was due for release Oct 2009, but this slipped to March 2010).

BTW, if you do decide to get the A3, I can thoroughly recommend the Bose sound system upgrade.

The Audi is clearly the better-looking car and the brand has more prestige imo. That's coming from a Golf owner. That said I'm looking to flip our car for an R32, as we only paid £17,069 OTR with a year's road tax for a 5 door DSG 160 TSi with convenience pack (scrappage + online discounts).

Audi A3 is replaced in 2012!!! I would still have the Audi you do get more for your money.

At the moment Golf in most cases is more expensive than the A3

Air vents and heater controls are looking a bit dated in the Audi, but i think i'd go A3 too.

Bigger spec (xenons, Bose, better seats, steering wheel etc), and more useable interior/boot space. The hard suspension and 18" wheels don't make for a comfy ride, but thats what some people want.

After thinking about the OP question and comparing the two cars in detail I would say go for the A3 Black edition in 3 dr form it looks great. I saw one yesterday and the LED lights look great on the Audi and is a head turner.

The spec is good as well and the overall presentation of the car is far better then the Golf, which is not bad itself but the Black edition is just far better then the Golf in every department.

I am now thinking of getting a new Audi A3 as my next car when it comes out I dont know why i did not consider it this time round ? oh yeh insurance thats why l0l

Having looked at an A3 before buying the golf, I have to say it was a very difficult choice for me, but I was swayed by the much better deal I managed to get from the VW dealership. I do find the comfort in the Golf better over the Audi (personal preference) and to get the same spec like for like I was having to pay much more for the Audi and have to go for the old 1.9 tdi which I was very keen to avoid. Overall I think this current Golf is excellent. I have had no issues and have now owned the car for nearly a year.
Its a difficult choice and one you should make yourself, I let other people's opinion put me off buying an R32 two years ago and it still annoys me that I allowed myself to have my opinion changed. Drive them both as much as you can and go with your heart. Only you can truly decide which car is best for you.

I had the same dilema a few months ago between a MK6 Golf GT TDI & an Audi A3 S-Line.

In the end I chose the Golf (my third one). I felt the interior was nicer in the new Golf in comparison to the Audi (some will disagree no doubt).

The ride quality and refinement was also better in the Golf.

I do think the Audi from the outside looks slightly more upmarket than the Golf but the looks and badge werent enough to make me choose it at the time.
