HI This is a reply regrding my original question which was posted in the new member section Fettler replied with some questions. Maybe somebody else has an idea now i've put it in the right section.
Hi Fettler, Noise is there from startup accompanied by the clouds of white smoke. The smoke goes when engine warmed up. The noise is a dull knocking sound which is diffucult to locate but seems to come from inside the engine. Doesn't seem to get any louder above 1500 rpm, but I haven't pushed it above 2000. The tickover is very lumpy and when driving feels like a bad plug would be in a petrol engine. THe camshaft looks fine ( was suggested that this was the fault ) the latest prognosis is that it is a big end and the noise is the piston hitting the underside of the head. I am currently looking at a replacement engine. Loads of money.....Thanks for your help

Sorry - I'm no help (as usual).

Just wanted to link to the original thread https://www.vwaudiforum.co.uk/forum/s...ead.php?t=8780

Sounds pretty serious, though, mate. I would have guessed at something like a big end. It's surely got to be something very seriously wrong with the timing and co-ordination of the pistons or a cylinder half off or something.

Sorry to not be any help - good luck resolving it.

Thanks for your interest. A replacement engine is going in next week. If that doesn't cure it i'm leaving town.
