Toyota To Fit Brake Override System In Cars

Toyota has announced it is to fit all of its new models with a 'brake override' system, as it continues to recall millions of cars over safety fears.

Around 180,000 Toyotas have been recalled in the UK

The new mechanism will cause the engine to cut power when the accelerator and brake pedals are applied at the same time, to prevent vehicles powering out of control.

Toyota's announcement comes after the US Transportation Department demanded that the firm provide documents showing when and how the company learned of the defects in its vehicles.

Toyota has had to recall 8.5 million vehicles across the globe and around 180,000 in the UK over concerns about the floor mats trapping accelerators and sticky pedals becoming slow to respond.
The Japanese firm has also had to recall its newest Prius model because of potential problems with its brakes.
The recall of the 2010 Prius and two other hybrids will affect 437,000 cars across the world, and around 8,500 in the UK.

Meanwhile, Toyota said it was halting production temporarily in San Antonio, Texas, and Georgetown, Kentucky, so that unsold vehicles do not build up at dealerships.
The information requests from the government follows criticism from consumer groups that the Transportation Department was too soft on car companies and failed to fine the companies or seek detailed information from them.
Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood has defended his department's handling of the Toyota investigation, calling the Japanese automaker "a little safety deaf" about the problems.
Mr LaHood said the government urged Toyota to issue recalls and sent federal safety officials to Japan to warn company officials of the seriousness of the problems.

new mechanism will cause the engine to cut power when the accelerator and brake pedals are applied at the same time
So no left foot braking for these drivers !
