Hi all, I have an 1996 8-valve GTi (AGG Engine), the Diff looks like it's on it's way out, so i'm looking for a replacement gearbox.

Can anyone help me out with a list of compatible units, i've been told a gearbox off a Mk2 GTi would slot straight on and the ratios are similar, any help is much appreciated.

    Hi Ian

What are the symptoms of a failing diff?
Just thought I'd ask, as my car is the same spec as yours, with 137,000 miles on.

The 8v Golf 2 GTI box (9A, ACD, AUG) uses a different clutch centre plate so you would need to change the clutch centre plate at least.

The 16v Golf 2 2Y box will fit with your original clutch but they are rare and failure prone.

You need a CGM, CHE, DDP, DFQ What makes you think the diff bearings or rivets are failing?

@markymark2009 and Crasher, I'm getting a sort of clicking noise when i'm totally off the power, and a very faint whine during general running, and i've had a mechanic sit in the car whilst i'm driving it, to have a listen, and he thinks it's the diff. He's since drained a sample of oil out of the box and there are loads of very small dust sized filings of metal, so even if it's not specifically the diff, the gearbox looks like it's gonna need replacing soon.

@Crasher, thanks for the info mate, I'm looking at keeping the clutch I have installed currently, mainly due to the fact I only had it replaced last September, So i'll be on the lookout for a CGM, CHE. DDP or a DFQ, most likely on ebay, unless I can get a decent priced one in exchange for the old box.

    Cheers

As far as i'm aware, no it won't as the 8V's have a cable clutch and rod gear linkage, whereas the 16v has a hydraulic clutch and cable gear linkage. That's from memory as I no longer have a Mk3 Golf and wouldn't have another one if it were bought for me, and if you're having issues with yours, get rid before it causes any more headaches, I now have a Lupo TDI and haven't looked back.

If you want to stick with it, a word of warning, be very careful buying 2nd hand as I was stung when I bought a 2nd hand box from a forum member on here IIRC, I couldn't test the box in the car as it was in the process of being broken, it was only apparent that the box was dodgy when it was in my car, and he claimed it was fine in his car hmmm I thought he'd say that!!! then had the expense on refurbishing the gearbox anyway, it was one of many problems that car had.

Sorry the post is so negative but that's my take on it!

It will fit after an awful lot of work changing clutch/flywheel, clutch operating system and full gear linkage and a myriad of other parts.
