    Its not that funny when you know what goes on in the day to day maintenance of an aircraft you might be getting on
    You may think I'm being helpful yet sarcastic, this is only because I feel I need to help you to help yourself in the future

    I can quite honestly say that the maintenance of aircraft is not down to individual mechanics when you are talking about large companies, therefore your "aircraft mechanic mate" is either talking about his own standards or the standards of those he works with!! when it comes to performing the tasks given to them!
    As an aircraft maintainer myself, there can be some quite surprising allowable limits, for example tyres on large commercial aircraft can continue flying (and landing) until the "SECOND" layer of cord shows through!! How many people would drive there cars at 200 MPH with a bare spot on the tread.
