Rear seat sensor

Hi all

Was having a root around my B5 estate Tdi and upon lifting the rear seat squabs I found a small black sensor fixed to the floorpan.

What does it do?

As I foresee using the full length of the vehicle to move stuff is there any danger of disturbing it?

It's the ESP control unit.
My passat is a taxi. Some drivers have had theirs damaged by over zelous passengers bouncing around in the back etc so I fashioned a small metal 'box' that i've fitted over the top to protect it, as they're quite pricey to replace...

Thinking about it perhaps a tupperware type tub would do the same job?
