However sometimes you can have thick creamy gunkj on the underside of your oil filler cap if you just do short journeys and never get the car very hot,also if your breather from rocker cover to air filter isblocked or collapsing it can cause this.

i agree,specially with the oil left in the motor for years and used rarely for short jurneys

Thanks for the replies guys, yes i'm only making very short journeys at the moment due to a change of job and i'm happy to subscribe to the theory of condensation being the cause of the 'milking' of the oil but it was the hose pressure that concerned me as i've never experienced this (or at least can't remember seeing it before) with my old Mk 1 GTI Golf or subsequent MK 2 'rocco GTXs hence my original question.

then get the combustion leak test done, and this will confirm hg problem or not. or just keep on driving it ans see what happens. if its a hg then it will get worse and eventually blow coolant out.
