hi recently bought my new golf and went to get my private plate put on the car. today i have a letter from dvla saying that my app cannot be processed as it needs a VIC check, called dvla to ask what for and just says that it has been flagged for them on their system. they didnt know why or what cat damage or anything.
with it being a new purchase i dont have the log book so cant see it on there, any ideas how i would find out?? guy from dvla said its either cat c, d or previously been stolen!
    cheers

I have had my number plate changed over a few times now and every time my local DVLA office advise that the DVLA can and sometimes do randomly check the car over. They advised that they use to do this quite a lot back in the days however not as much now as a number plate transfer is quite common.

Is it a brand new car? If not do a HPI/Car Data Check.
There are a few companies that offer this:

    http://www.hpicheck.com/
    http://www.theaa.com/car-data-checks/
    http://www.rac.co.uk/products-services/car-data-checks/

These will tell you if anything is flagged up on the car... Make sure you have your VIN number to hand to do a full check.

Let us know how you get on

hi , when i got the letter saying that i needed the vic check, i called dvla to find out the reason why, the guy was not very helpful but said that it was because the insurance company flagged it to them. so either written off, stolen or something similar. the thing is though its £41 for the test so its a right pain. why it is a vehicle identity check, and they dont check quality of repairs or if its road worthty. just stupid how dvla cant tell me why they need the test to be done.!! ha

They make the rules I'm afriad so we have to do as they wish,

It's odd that you have to pay for the check if you want to do a number plate change however they dont want to check the car otherwise

i know it is strange but they will not send my log book to me until i have the vic check, so they said it will be hard to get tax. that dosent bother me because i could get a friend mechanic to do it on his traders policy but its just the plate i want on. £80 transfer and then £40 vic check

Sounds like it is something major then... I'd get them to check it out, at least you will find out if your driving a death trap or not
