thanks for the info, thats perfect. I have checked and it looks like you probably have a gearbox from a 1.8 engine either a CHB or CHD i suspect. these have shorter ratios than the DFQ which would have been fitted as standard.

I have checked the theoretical speeds at a given RPM and the ratios for the CHB or CHD look about right for what you have mentioned previously.

just to check, if you can be bothered to get under your car again and check on the left hand side of the diff casing beneath and to the rear of the drive shaft (not on the bellhousing as previously suggested).

also, try looking at the vehicle info sticker in the boot to see what box was originally fitted (almost certainly a DFQ).

you could try googling 'speedometer recalibration' and it will bring back a variety of companies which will often come to you to recalibrate the speedo. they also offer some shady mileage 'correction' services...
