    Hi Panda,

thanks for the info, thats perfect. I have checked and it looks like you probably have a gearbox from a 1.8 engine either a CHB or CHD i suspect. these have shorter ratios than the DFQ which would have been fitted as standard.

I have checked the theoretical speeds at a given RPM and the ratios for the CHB or CHD look about right for what you have mentioned previously.

just to check, if you can be bothered to get under your car again and check on the left hand side of the diff casing beneath and to the rear of the drive shaft (not on the bellhousing as previously suggested).

also, try looking at the vehicle info sticker in the boot to see what box was originally fitted (almost certainly a DFQ).

you could try googling 'speedometer recalibration' and it will bring back a variety of companies which will often come to you to recalibrate the speedo. they also offer some shady mileage 'correction' services...

    an outfit like this:

or try looking in the site supporters area as one may be able to help.

sorry if this is a little convoluted!

    Hi DKM,
I cannot thank you enough for the help you have given me. At least now I know I have the wrong gearbox fitted! I will have a look under the car tomorrow and also at the boot sticker. It may be worth me going back to the Co that fitted the gearbox and telling them it is wrong! The only trouble is that the box they replaced may have been wrong as well and they could just say they swapped like for like. If I don't get any joy with them, I will try recalibrating the speedo as suggested.
My biggest concern is when I come to sell the car, do I own up to the wrong gearbox - a moral dilema!!
    Many thanks again - Panda

    Hi again DKM,

Just had a thought, if I don't get any joy swapping the gerabox for the correct one, would it be possible to fit a new speedo transducer that is correct for the CHB or CHD gearbox which we suspect is fitted? At least that way my speedo will be correct.

One last question - with the speedo/gearbox being wrong, will that also affect the mileometer or does that get its signal from somewhere else?

    Cheers Panda

    Hi Panda,

my pleasure, always glad to help. re the moral dilemma, i wouldnt worry too much, my golf has a replacement gearbox which i wouldnt bother to mention. leave the invoice in the paperwork and if the buyer goes through it and asks about it then tell them, buyer beware and all that!

regarding replacing the whole instrument cluster, this is one solution but you would have to bear in mind that the odometer would then probably need to be altered, so you would need to contact a mobile company so it might be just as easy to get the rev counter fixed.

finally, i believe (but stand to be corrected!) that the odometer reading comes from a sensor in the wheel or the hub and should not be affected by the different gearbox - though if you were to fit different size wheels it can throw it out a bit.

let us know how you get on checking the codes in the boot and on the 'box.

    Hi DKM,

Good news my gearbox is sorted. Took it back to the Co that fitted the replacement, they checked it out ands the crown wheel was 17t not 18t, plus changed final drive ratio. Now speedo is there or there abouts and not revving so high. All sorted FOC.

I can recommend www.cleckheaton-gearbox-centre.co.uk in Bradford. They supply and or fit gearboxes all over the UK, good lads and reasonable. 2yr or 24k guarantee.

    Thanks again, panda
